How to Stop Your Fridge From Smelling

You open the fridge for milk and get hit with a smell that makes you close it again real quick. Sound familiar? It happens to almost everyone at some point.

You do not need to buy a brand new appliance today. Most fridge odours have a simple cause, and an even simpler fix. It just takes a little bit of time and the right strategy to get things fresh again.

Why fridges develop odours

Fridges are cold, damp, and enclosed, which is basically the perfect setup for smells to develop. There is very little airflow inside a closed fridge, so any tiny odor just traps itself and grows. The air circulates around and around, spreading the scent to everything else inside. Soon, your fresh butter tastes like yesterday’s chopped onions. It is a frustrating cycle. You need to know exactly what you are fighting before you start cleaning.

 The usual suspects:

CauseWhy it smells
Forgotten leftoversFood going off quietly at the back
Old spillsSitting and fermenting on shelves
Dirty drip trayCollects condensation and grime
Grubby door sealTraps mould in the folds
Strong foodsOnion, curry, and fish odours cling

Step 1: Empty and toss expired food

Start by emptying the whole fridge. Go through everything, check dates, and if you’re unsure or it smells off, toss it. Don’t skip the back corners. That’s exactly where forgotten containers go to die.

Step 2: Deep clean shelves and drawers

Take out every shelf and drawer and wash them properly in warm soapy water. Stubborn dried spills need a 10 minute soak first to loosen up. Dry everything fully before it goes back in, since damp surfaces just invite more smell.

Step 3: Clean the drip tray and seal

This is the step most people miss entirely. The drip tray, tucked underneath most fridges, collects condensation and is a common hidden source of musty smells. Slide it out, wash it, and let it dry completely.

Then wipe the rubber door seal with warm soapy water, working into the folds where grime and mould love to gather. An old toothbrush makes this way easier.

Step 4: deodorise (bicarb, not just air freshener)

Air fresheners just cover up the problem. Bicarb soda actually absorbs odours at the source. Leave an open box or bowl of it inside the fridge. Activated charcoal does the same job if you’d rather go that route.

Preventing future smells

Once your fridge is completely clean, you want to keep it that way for good. Prevention is always much easier than doing a massive deep clean every single month.

  • Wipe spills up immediately, not next week, so they never get the chance to dry, harden, and ferment.
  • Run a quick check every single week and bin anything past its use-by date before it starts to rot.
  • Store strong smelling foods in properly sealed glass or plastic containers with tight, airtight lids.
  • Clean the hidden drip tray and the rubber door seal every few months to stop grime from building up again.
  • Keep a fresh box of bicarb soda topped up at all times so it can catch stray smells instantly.

When a smell means a problem

Sometimes no amount of cleaning fixes the bad smell, and that’s a clear sign of something else going on inside the appliance. You can scrub for hours and the scent still lingers.

  • A chemical or plasticky smell can point to a serious coolant problem or a refrigerant leak.
  • A smell returning straight after a deep clean often means the door seal has failed completely and is letting warm air in constantly. This creates non-stop condensation and fast mould growth.
  • Food spoiling much faster than normal suggests the fridge isn’t holding the correct temperature properly anymore.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having the fridge properly checked by a professional technician instead of just cleaning around the issue.

FAQs

Why does my fridge smell bad even when clean?

A smell that returns after cleaning usually points to a hidden source, like the drip tray, the rubber seal, or a developing mechanical fault. It could also mean odor molecules have soaked deeply into the plastic walls themselves over a long period.

How do I get rid of a fridge smell fast?

Deep clean the interior, the hidden drip tray, and the rubber seal, then leave an open box of bicarb soda inside to soak up what’s left. Wiping the internal walls with a mixture of water and white vinegar also neutralizes smells instantly.

Does baking soda really work in a fridge?

Yes. Bicarb soda absorbs odours rather than masking them with artificial perfume, which is why it works significantly better than a standard air freshener. It chemically alters the smell molecules to eliminate them for good.

If smells keep coming back no matter what you try, it might be time to check how long do fridges last, or browse our current fridges range. A modern, efficient fridge can save you a lot of cleaning stress in the future.
