Our Sustainability Philosophy
At WA White Goods, sustainability is not a marketing tagline — it is our entire business model. Every single product we sell is a second-hand or reconditioned appliance that has been diverted from landfill and given a functional second life in a WA home or business.
Australia generates enormous volumes of e-waste and discarded white goods each year. Large household appliances — washing machines, refrigerators, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, and air conditioners — are among the most resource-intensive products manufactured. The extraction of raw materials, the energy consumed in manufacturing, and the carbon footprint of global shipping all contribute significantly to an appliance's environmental cost long before it ever reaches a customer.
When an appliance is discarded after a relatively short lifespan — whether due to a minor fault, a cosmetic issue, or simply being replaced — all of that embedded environmental cost is wasted. We exist to prevent that waste.
The Three Pillars of Our Sustainability Approach
Circular Economy Commitment: WA White Goods operates within the principles of a circular economy — an economic model in which resources are kept in use for as long as possible, maximum value is extracted from them whilst in use, and products and materials are recovered and regenerated at the end of each service life. Rather than the traditional linear model of "make, use, dispose," we close the loop by extending product life cycles and ensuring responsible end-of-life management for items we cannot sell.
The Environmental Case for Second-Hand Appliances
Understanding the environmental value of second-hand appliances requires understanding the full lifecycle impact of a white good — from raw material extraction through to end-of-life disposal. This context helps explain why purchasing a reconditioned appliance from WA White Goods is often a significantly more environmentally responsible choice than buying new.
The Hidden Environmental Cost of New Appliances
- Raw Material Extraction: Manufacturing a new washing machine requires steel, aluminium, copper, plastics, and electronic components — all of which require energy-intensive mining and processing. The extraction of these materials has significant ecological impacts on habitats, waterways, and local communities, often in developing nations.
- Manufacturing Carbon Footprint: The production of a single new refrigerator can generate hundreds of kilograms of CO₂ equivalent emissions — before it ever reaches a store. Factory energy consumption, chemical use, and production waste all contribute to this embedded carbon cost.
- Global Shipping & Logistics: The vast majority of new white goods sold in Australia are manufactured overseas — primarily in China, South Korea, and Europe — and shipped thousands of kilometres before reaching Australian consumers. This shipping contributes significantly to each product's total lifecycle carbon footprint.
- Packaging Waste: New appliances come packaged in large quantities of cardboard, polystyrene, and plastic — most of which is single-use and ends up in the waste stream shortly after purchase.
- Premature Disposal: Many appliances are discarded long before the end of their functional life — due to a minor fault that could be repaired, a cosmetic issue, an upgrade to a newer model, or a move. Every premature disposal wastes all of the embedded manufacturing energy and resources.
Australia's Appliance Waste Problem
Australia is one of the highest per-capita generators of e-waste in the world. The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS) and related programmes address some of this waste, but large household appliances — washing machines, refrigerators, dryers, and dishwashers — present a significant ongoing challenge for WA waste management infrastructure.
Western Australia faces particular challenges due to its geographic isolation, relatively limited recycling infrastructure compared to eastern states, and significant distances between population centres and processing facilities. Landfill remains a common disposal pathway for discarded appliances in WA, with associated leaching of metals, refrigerants, and other materials into soil and groundwater.
The Value of Buying Second-Hand: When you purchase a reconditioned appliance from WA White Goods, you are not simply buying a cheaper product — you are preserving all of the energy, resources, and manufacturing effort that went into producing that appliance, extending its useful life, and preventing it from entering the WA waste stream. That is a genuinely meaningful environmental contribution, and we are proud to make it possible.
Regulatory Context — WA & Federal
Our operations align with and support several key Australian and Western Australian environmental and waste policy frameworks:
- Product Stewardship Act 2011 (Cth): The federal framework for managing the environmental, health, safety, and social impacts of products across their full lifecycle. WA White Goods supports the objectives of this Act by extending product lifecycles and reducing waste streams.
- National Waste Policy 2018 (Australian Government): Australia's national framework for waste and resource recovery, which sets targets for reducing waste to landfill and increasing resource recovery rates. Our business model directly contributes to these targets.
- Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act 2007 (WA): Western Australia's primary waste management legislation, which prioritises waste avoidance and resource recovery in accordance with the waste hierarchy.
- Refrigerant Management — Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995 (Cth): Governs the handling, recovery, and disposal of refrigerants in refrigerators and air conditioners. WA White Goods follows all applicable requirements for refrigerant management.
How We Source Our Appliances
Every appliance at WA White Goods has a history — and we know that history matters to our customers. We source second-hand and ex-display appliances through a variety of responsible channels and apply a consistent pre-assessment process before any item enters our reconditioning workshop.
Our Sourcing Channels
🏠 Private Household Acquisitions
Appliances acquired from private households in Perth and the surrounding metropolitan area — typically when households are upgrading, downsizing, moving, or clearing estates. These represent the majority of our stock.
🏪 Ex-Display & Ex-Floor Stock
Display models from retailers, showrooms, and appliance stores. These items are often in excellent cosmetic and functional condition, having been used only for demonstration purposes and never in a domestic setting.
🏗 Property Clearances & Renovations
Appliances removed during property renovations, rental property refurbishments, and building clearances across the Perth metropolitan area. These items are often in good working condition but are replaced as part of broader property upgrades.
📦 Trade-In & Upgrade Programmes
Appliances traded in by customers upgrading to a different model or size. We assess all trade-ins on the spot and accept items that meet our minimum quality standards for reconditioning.
🔧 Insurance & Warranty Returns
Items returned through insurance claims or warranty programmes where the appliance has been partially or fully repaired but can no longer be sold as new. These often arrive in very good functional condition.
🏢 Commercial & Business Clearances
Appliances from office fit-outs, hospitality businesses, student accommodation, and commercial properties undergoing refurbishment. Items such as refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers from these sources are assessed individually.
Pre-Acquisition Assessment
Before accepting any appliance into our workshop, our team conducts a preliminary assessment to determine whether the item is suitable for reconditioning and resale. Items are rejected at this stage if they:
- Pose an irreparable safety risk due to structural damage, severe electrical faults, or other hazards that cannot be rectified through reconditioning.
- Have been subject to a safety recall that has not been remediated — we check all incoming appliances against the Product Safety Australia Recalls Database.
- Are in such poor cosmetic or functional condition that reconditioning would not result in an item meeting our minimum acceptable quality standard for any condition rating tier.
- Are of a model or age for which spare parts, refrigerants, or servicing expertise are no longer reasonably available in Australia.
- Contain refrigerants or materials that require specialised licensed handling that exceeds our current capabilities.
Product Safety Recalls: WA White Goods checks all incoming appliances against the Product Safety Australia Recalls Database (productsafety.gov.au/recalls) and the ACCC's Product Safety database before any item is listed for sale. Appliances subject to mandatory or voluntary recalls that have not been remediated are not sold. We take product safety obligations under the Australian Consumer Law very seriously.
The Reconditioning Process — Step by Step
Every appliance that passes our pre-acquisition assessment enters our structured reconditioning process at our Welshpool workshop. This process is applied consistently to all items, regardless of their source or apparent condition. The following steps describe what happens to an appliance from the moment it arrives at our premises to the moment it is listed for sale.
No Shortcuts: Every step in this process is applied to every appliance, regardless of how good it looks on arrival. An appliance that appears to be in perfect cosmetic condition still undergoes full functional testing, electrical safety testing, and our complete grading assessment before it is listed for sale. We do not skip steps or create shortcuts based on visual appearance — because appearance does not guarantee safety or function.
Safety Testing & Electrical Compliance
Electrical safety is the most critical element of our reconditioning process. All appliances sold by WA White Goods must meet the applicable electrical safety standards under Australian and Western Australian law before they can be sold or delivered to a customer.
Applicable Australian Electrical Safety Standards
What We Test — The PAT Process
| Test | What It Checks | Pass Criterion |
|---|---|---|
| Earth Continuity Test | Verifies that the appliance's earth wire provides a low-resistance path to ground — critical for protecting users from electric shock in the event of an internal fault. | Resistance ≤ 1 Ω (for most Class I appliances in accordance with AS/NZS 3760) |
| Insulation Resistance Test | Measures the resistance between live conductors and the accessible metal parts of the appliance. Low insulation resistance indicates deterioration of wiring insulation that could lead to shock or fire. | ≥ 1 MΩ at 500 V DC (in accordance with AS/NZS 3760) |
| Leakage Current Test | Measures the current flowing through unintended paths — an indicator of insulation breakdown, component failure, or moisture ingress. Excessive leakage current is a serious safety concern. | Within limits specified in AS/NZS 3760 for the relevant appliance class |
| Visual Inspection — Plug & Cord | Physical inspection of the power cord, plug, and strain relief for damage, exposed conductors, cracks, or deterioration. | No visible damage. Replacement of power cord required if any damage is identified. |
| Full Operational Function Test | Full operation through all primary functions and cycles to verify the appliance performs as intended. | All advertised functions operate correctly through at least one full cycle. |
If an Appliance Fails Safety Testing: Any appliance that fails any component of our electrical safety test is immediately removed from the sales pipeline. It will either be repaired by a qualified technician and fully re-tested before it can be reconsidered for sale, or — if the fault cannot be safely repaired — it will be deregistered from our inventory and directed to responsible disposal (see Section 9). We do not sell appliances with unresolved electrical safety failures under any circumstances.
Our Condition Rating System
Honest, consistent condition disclosure is one of the most important things we do for our customers. Every product listed by WA White Goods is assigned a condition rating using our standardised five-tier system. This rating is displayed prominently on every product listing and forms the basis of the product's description for the purposes of Australian Consumer Law.
When you purchase an appliance from us, its condition rating — and the written description of any notable cosmetic features — forms part of the contract. If an appliance does not match its listed condition rating in a material way, you are entitled to a remedy under the ACL's consumer guarantees (see Section 11).
What the Condition Rating Covers — and What It Does Not
| Aspect | Covered by Condition Rating | NOT Covered (Always Guaranteed) |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic Appearance | The extent and nature of scratches, scuffs, dents, and surface marks. Items rated D or E may have significant cosmetic issues — this is expected and disclosed. | Cosmetic issues do not affect your ACL guarantee of acceptable quality for the item's core function at the disclosed condition level. |
| Core Functionality | All condition ratings from A through D guarantee that the appliance's primary functions work correctly. Only Grade E items may have disclosed functional limitations. | An item with a Grade D cosmetic rating must still function correctly. A Grade D rating does not excuse functional failures. |
| Electrical Safety | Not a condition rating factor — electrical safety is a prerequisite and every item (including Grade E) must pass PAT testing to be sold. | Electrical safety is guaranteed for ALL items regardless of condition rating. |
| Product Description Accuracy | The condition rating forms part of the product's description for ACL purposes. An item must match its stated rating. | If an item does not match its stated condition rating, you are entitled to an ACL remedy regardless of the rating tier. |
In-Person Inspection: We strongly encourage customers to inspect appliances in person at our Welshpool showroom before purchasing, particularly for items with a Grade C, D, or E rating. Our team is happy to walk you through the specific cosmetic and functional characteristics of any item. Inspections are available during business hours, Monday to Saturday, 09:00 AM – 05:00 PM AWST & Sunday, 11:00 AM – 03:00 PM AWST. Call ahead on +61 424 260 450 to confirm availability.

Appliance Age & Parts Availability
We are mindful of the relationship between appliance age and the availability of spare parts and service support. As a general guide, we apply the following approach to older appliances:
- Appliances for which manufacturer-recommended or compatible replacement parts are no longer reasonably available in Australia are assessed very carefully before acceptance into our reconditioning programme. If parts availability is genuinely exhausted, the appliance may not be suitable for resale.
- The expected remaining serviceable life of an appliance is taken into account when setting warranty periods and pricing. Older appliances receive shorter warranty periods that reflect their age, prior use, and the remaining engineering life expectancy of key components.
- Where a product's age or condition limits the warranty period, this is clearly disclosed in the product listing and on the warranty documentation provided at the time of purchase.
Don't See What You're Looking For? Our stock changes regularly as new appliances enter our reconditioning process. If you are looking for a specific type or brand of appliance, contact us on +61 424 260 450 or email [email protected] and we will let you know when a suitable item becomes available or reaches our showroom floor.
What We Do With Appliances We Cannot Sell
Not every appliance that enters our workshop can be reconditioned to a standard suitable for resale. Some items fail safety tests that cannot be economically remediated. Others are in cosmetic or functional condition that places them below our minimum Grade E threshold. Our responsibility to sustainability does not end when we decide not to sell an item — what happens next matters just as much.
The Hierarchy of Outcomes for Unsaleable Appliances
We apply the waste hierarchy — consistent with the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act 2007 (WA) — to determine the best outcome for any appliance we cannot sell:
Refrigerant Management
Refrigerants used in household refrigerators and air conditioners include both older HFC and HCFC compounds that are potent greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances. Under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989 (Cth) and associated regulations, refrigerants must not be vented to atmosphere and must be handled by appropriately licensed persons.
- WA White Goods follows all applicable legal requirements for refrigerant handling. Where refrigerants must be recovered from appliances being disposed of, this is carried out by or under the supervision of persons holding the required refrigerant handling licence.
- Recovered refrigerant is handled in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements — it is not released to atmosphere under any circumstances.
- For appliances being reconditioned for resale, refrigerant integrity is assessed during the testing process. Any appliance showing evidence of refrigerant loss is investigated and the issue is addressed before the appliance is sold.
Waste Reduction & Responsible Disposal in Our Operations
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the products we sell to the way we run our operations. We make active efforts to reduce waste generation, minimise our operational environmental footprint, and manage the waste we do generate responsibly.
Operational Sustainability Practices
- Minimal Packaging: We use minimal packaging for deliveries — primarily protective materials to prevent transit damage. We avoid single-use plastic wrapping where possible and use recycled or recyclable packaging materials wherever practicable.
- Local Delivery Network: Our delivery operations are focused on the Perth metropolitan area, which minimises the transport distances involved in getting appliances to our customers and reduces our delivery-related carbon footprint compared to national shipping models.
- Workshop Consumables: We purchase cleaning agents, repair materials, and consumables from suppliers who can demonstrate environmentally responsible manufacturing and disposal practices where alternatives are available.
- Water Use in Testing: When running full wash cycles and dishwasher tests, we are mindful of water consumption and aim to conduct tests efficiently. Water used during testing is managed in accordance with Welshpool local authority requirements.
- Energy Consumption: Our Welshpool premises uses energy for workshop operations, lighting, and appliance testing. We are exploring energy efficiency improvements including LED lighting upgrades and off-peak testing scheduling to reduce peak demand.
- Paper Reduction: We operate a digital-first record-keeping system for inventory management, customer records, and compliance documentation, minimising our use of paper-based records.
Continuous Improvement
WA White Goods is committed to continuously improving the sustainability of our operations. We review our processes annually and are always looking for practical ways to reduce our environmental footprint — whether through better waste management practices, improved energy efficiency, or new partnerships with recycling and reuse organisations in the Perth metropolitan area.
If you have suggestions for how we could improve our sustainability practices, we genuinely want to hear them. Please contact us at [email protected] with subject line "Sustainability Feedback".
The Biggest Sustainability Impact We Make: While we are committed to reducing our operational footprint, the single most significant environmental contribution WA White Goods makes is the core of our business — diverting functional appliances from the waste stream and extending their useful life. Every appliance we recondition and sell represents avoided manufacturing emissions, avoided resource extraction, and avoided landfill. That is where our sustainability story truly lies.
Consumer Guarantees & Second-Hand Goods Under Australian Consumer Law
Buying a reconditioned or second-hand appliance from WA White Goods does not mean you have fewer legal rights. Australian Consumer Law consumer guarantees apply to all goods sold in trade or commerce — including second-hand and reconditioned goods. Understanding how these guarantees apply to our products is important, and we want to be completely transparent about what you are entitled to.
Key ACL Consumer Guarantees — Second-Hand Context
| ACL Guarantee | How It Applies to Reconditioned Appliances |
|---|---|
| Acceptable Quality (s54) | Goods must be of acceptable quality — safe, durable, free from defects, and fit for common purpose — having regard to their disclosed condition and price. A Grade C appliance does not need to look new, but it does need to function correctly and be safe. Cosmetic imperfections consistent with the disclosed condition rating are not quality failures. Functional failures are, regardless of the condition rating. |
| Matches Description (s56) | Goods must match their description. Our condition ratings and product descriptions are part of the item's description. If an appliance is significantly worse than its listed condition — e.g. listed as Grade B but delivered in Grade D condition — this is a breach of the description guarantee and entitles you to a remedy. |
| Fit for Disclosed Purpose (s55) | If you informed us of a specific purpose before purchase and we confirmed the item would meet that purpose, it must do so. For example, if you told us you needed a 7 kg washing machine for a household of five and we confirmed the item was suitable, it must perform that function adequately. |
| Reasonable Durability | Goods must last for a reasonable period given their disclosed condition, age, and price. A reconditioned appliance is not expected to last as long as a brand-new one — but it must last for a reasonable period. An appliance that fails within days or weeks of purchase in normal use has almost certainly not met this standard. |
| Compensation for Consequential Loss | You may be entitled to compensation for reasonably foreseeable loss caused by a consumer guarantee failure — not just the cost of the appliance. This applies equally to second-hand goods. |
Our Warranty on Reconditioned Appliances
In addition to your statutory rights under the ACL (which cannot be limited by any warranty terms), WA White Goods provides a warranty on all reconditioned appliances sold. Warranty periods vary depending on the appliance type, condition rating, and age of the item and are disclosed in each product listing and on the warranty documentation provided with your purchase.
Full details of our warranty terms, coverage, and claims process are available in our Warranty Policy.
ACL Statement: Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and for compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure. The fact that a product is second-hand or reconditioned does not diminish these rights — it simply means they are applied in the context of the disclosed condition and price.
Regulatory & Legal Compliance
WA White Goods operates in full compliance with all applicable Australian federal and Western Australian state legislation governing the sale of second-hand electrical goods, product safety, consumer protection, environmental management, and privacy. The following framework of laws and regulations governs our operations.
Consumer Protection & Fair Trading
- Australian Consumer Law (Schedule 2, Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth)): The primary consumer protection framework. All sales comply with the ACL's consumer guarantee provisions, product safety requirements, and prohibitions on misleading or deceptive conduct.
- Fair Trading Act 2010 (WA): Western Australia's complementary fair trading legislation. WA White Goods complies with all provisions, including disclosure requirements for second-hand goods dealers.
- Second-Hand Dealers Act 1994 (WA): Where applicable, WA White Goods complies with the requirements of this Act regarding the acquisition and sale of second-hand goods in Western Australia.
Electrical Safety
- Electricity Act 1945 (WA) & Electricity (Licensing) Regulations 1991 (WA): Governing the safe installation, use, and sale of electrical equipment in Western Australia. WA White Goods complies with all applicable requirements for persons dealing in second-hand electrical appliances.

- Energy Safety WA: We maintain compliance with the requirements of Energy Safety (a division of the WA Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety) regarding the sale of second-hand electrical goods.
Environmental & Waste
- Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Act 2007 (WA): Our operations align with the waste hierarchy established under this Act — prioritising avoidance, reuse, and recycling over disposal.
- Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989 (Cth): Governs our handling of refrigerants in refrigerators and air conditioners. All refrigerant handling is conducted in accordance with the associated Regulations.
- Product Stewardship Act 2011 (Cth): We support the objectives of this Act by extending product lifecycles and engaging in responsible end-of-life management practices.
Product Safety
- Part 3-3, Australian Consumer Law — Product Safety Provisions: We comply with all mandatory safety standards applicable to our product categories and do not sell goods subject to active product banning orders or unremediated mandatory recalls.
- Product Safety Australia Recalls Database: All incoming appliances are checked against this database before reconditioning or sale commences. URL: www.productsafety.gov.au/recalls
Privacy
- Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) & Australian Privacy Principles: All personal information collected from customers is handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy and the APPs.
Questions About Compliance: If you have a question about our compliance with any applicable law or regulation, or if you believe we may have breached a legal obligation in relation to your purchase or our products, please contact us at [email protected] in the first instance. You also have the right to contact Consumer Protection WA (1300 30 40 54), the ACCC (1300 302 502), or Energy Safety WA ((08) 6551 4300) if you have concerns about our compliance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to buy a second-hand appliance?
Yes — when it has been properly tested and reconditioned. Every appliance sold by WA White Goods has passed our mandatory electrical safety testing programme in accordance with AS/NZS 3760, has been checked against product safety recall databases, and has passed a full operational function test. We would not sell an appliance that we would not be comfortable having in our own home.
What does "reconditioned" actually mean?
A reconditioned appliance is a second-hand appliance that has been cleaned, tested, repaired where necessary, and assessed to confirm it is in safe and functional working order. It is not the same as "second-hand as-is" — a reconditioned appliance has been through a structured process to confirm its safety and function. WA White Goods does not sell untested, as-is second-hand appliances.
Do ACL consumer guarantees apply to second-hand appliances?
Yes, absolutely. The Australian Consumer Law applies to all goods sold in trade or commerce — including second-hand and reconditioned goods. The standard of "acceptable quality" takes into account the disclosed condition and price of the item, but consumer guarantees apply in full. You are entitled to the same legal protections you would have purchasing a new appliance. See Section 11 for full details.
How long will a reconditioned appliance last?
This varies significantly depending on the appliance type, its age, its original quality, and how it is used. A well-maintained, quality-brand washing machine may function reliably for many more years after reconditioning. We are honest about the expected remaining lifespan in our warranty periods, which reflect the appliance's age and condition. For any specific appliance, our team can provide their honest assessment of its expected longevity.
What if something goes wrong after I buy it?
Contact us first — most issues are resolved quickly and fairly through direct communication. Phone +61 424 260 450 or email [email protected]. All warranty claims are handled under our Warranty Policy and your ACL rights are fully protected. If you are not satisfied with our response, you have clear escalation options through Consumer Protection WA and other external bodies — as detailed in our Complaints & Dispute Resolution Policy.
Can I see the appliance in person before buying?
Yes, and we actively encourage it — especially for Grade C, D, or E items. Our Welshpool showroom is open Monday to Saturday, 09:00 AM – 05:00 PM AWST & Sunday, 11:00 AM – 03:00 PM AWST. Our team can walk you through the specific characteristics of any item, including all noted cosmetic marks and the test results from our reconditioning process. Call ahead on +61 424 260 450 to confirm the item is still available.
Can I trade in my old appliance?
We do accept appliances for assessment at our Welshpool premises. Not every item is suitable for our reconditioning programme, but we will provide an honest assessment and — where we cannot accept an item for resale — we can provide guidance on responsible disposal options in the Perth metropolitan area.
Are your appliances energy efficient?
Many of our appliances pre-date Australia's current mandatory energy labelling requirements, and we do not apply MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards) claims to second-hand goods. We recommend that customers research the energy performance of specific makes and models using the Energy Rating website (energyrating.gov.au). As a general rule, more recently manufactured appliances tend to be more energy efficient than older models — and we factor this context into our pricing.
How do I know the appliance hasn't been in a flood or fire?
Our sourcing and intake processes include questioning about the appliance's history and visual inspection for signs of water damage, fire or smoke damage, or other significant events. Any appliance showing evidence of flood, fire, or smoke damage is not accepted into our reconditioning programme. Our electrical safety testing also provides an additional safeguard — water and fire damage frequently leave detectable evidence in electrical safety test results.
